Sorval RC5B braking takes ten min. to stop.

I have just purchased the Sorvall centrifuge and the brake on the unit does not work? How do I trouble shut it and what do I look for?
Also I need a rotor to work on a fisnar syringe 55cc that is 7 inches long and 1 inch in diameter.

There are several versions of braking circuits designed into the RC5B. The very old units do not have a circuit board on the frount left side of the unit. There might be a circuit on the top right or in the back depending on the age of the unit.

In generial, I believe the circuit works about the same in all units. Electronic circuit starts at one of two circuit breakers at the back of the unit, then goes to a bridge and comes out 30vdc to the brake assy, then to the motor windings.

I am assuming that your

I am assuming that your breaking circuit is turned on (light inside the switch is on). I also assume you are aware that it can take 3 minutes for the unit to stop under normal operation.

That being the case I can tell you there is a breaking circuit located on the fount left side of the unit. Two screws allow you excess to this board by allowing you to remove the fount cover. Part of the preventive maintenance of this unit is to make sure the white plastic holders do not break. This is a very bad thing, because it shorts out other boards. More than likely, this is not your issue if it runs. Replacing the board will most likely correct the issue. I have several of them if you wish to address this issue further.
